MAGIC JHUMKAS: GROWTH
GROWTH explores the deep interconnectedness of queerness, the cosmos, and constant transformation. Here, the MAGIC JHUMKAS crash into the city, taking root, and reshaping the world around them. They awaken the magic within, calling upon an ancient bond with the character’s transancestors. From the river of revolution flowing from the character’s neck, new infrastructures and systems begin to bloom. Layered into the piece are collaged wishes for queer futures, gathered through workshops with participants imagining liberated worlds. Queerness and transness are world-building forces, growing new futures. The future is a cycle that carries the past — a past where trans people have always existed.
Magic Jhumkas tells the story of a gender expansive being who channels ancestral power through a pair of enchanted jhumkas - traditional South Asian earrings transformed into cosmic weapons of resistance. Set in a speculative urban landscape, the visual series imagines the city as a living and fluid organism where rivers burst through concrete, ancestral bodies watch from the skies, and oppressive structures crumble. The work honours ancestral wisdom, transpower, and the power of collective imagination as tools for survival and transformation.
