MAGIC JHUMKAS: LIBERATION
LIBERATION captures the charged moment of upheveal, power and freedom. A gender-expansive figure calls ancestral force through magic jhumkas that rupture systems of oppression and transform spaces and society. Emanating and reflecting power from generations. From their mouth, the five rivers of Panjab surge forward, flowing like a battle cry across concrete and sky. Each river carries memory and rebellion - reclaiming space, breaking grids, and planting seeds of a future unbound by the systems of domination and colonialism that once held it. A vision of liberation rooted in land, lineage, and the innate power of queerness and transness.
Magic Jhumkas is a series that tells the story of a gender expansive being who channels ancestral power through a pair of enchanted jhumkas - traditional South Asian earrings transformed into cosmic weapons of resistance. Set in a speculative urban landscape, the visual series imagines the city as a living and fluid organism where rivers burst through concrete, ancestral bodies watch from the skies, and oppressive structures crumble. The work honours ancestral wisdom, transpower, and the power of collective imagination as tools for survival and transformation.
